This story captures colonial life in an account of our first president from his childhood at Wakefield Farm up until his presidency. Students will be inspired by the qualities that were built into Washington's life which enabled him to lead the struggling colonies through a revolutionary war to freedom. Color and black-and-white lithographs. This book can be purchased separately, as part of literature packs, or in a set of eight of d'Aulaire's books (see Related Items below). From the Book:
On the common of Cambridge, outside Boston, General Washington took command of his army. It was a strange army, for his men were not soldiers, but farmers and hunters. They were brave, but whenever they wanted to see their farms and their children they ran home, and Washington never knew how many men he had. Patiently he set to work to make them good soldiers, and after some months he had them so well trained that they were able to force the Redcoats out of Boston.
