The subtitle of Yonge's book is "Ambition." While addressing the important Victorian issues of women's education and the Oxford movement which involved spreading the values of high-church Anglicanism, she writes a compelling story of a large family with intensely drawn characters. While not an easy read, the book addresses complex character issues and development. As Rea Berg writes in her introduction to this 1852 best seller, "The lowly daisy represents the path of humility essential to this faith and is a recurring theme in The Daisy Chain. The heroes and heroines of this novel are those who renounce the pleasures and plaudits of worldly fame and success, in order to live a life of service to others." As you examine the attributes of Yonge's characters select one or compare and contrast two characters at most, and address their relevance to today's youth, you will need to cite at least four passages supporting your view.

Entries must include a title page with the student's: name, address, phone number, e-mail address (if available), and age. This information should not appear on any of the actual essay pages (see blind judging the following paragraph). All papers must be received by April 30, 2006. Judging will be done blind. Papers will be assigned numbers and will be judged by Beautiful Feet books and Hewitt Homeschooling Resources jointly. Seventy-five percent of the grade will be based on content, and 25% on formatting and grammar. BF Books and Hewitt HR reserve the right to withhold making an award if no papers are received that are deemed to be of acceptable quality.

A persuasive essay is a fully developed argument, designed to persuade an audience to understand and empathize with a particular opinion. In that you are doing outside research, this is similar to a research paper, but rather than presenting unbiased research, you are to form and advance an opinion about the material you are studying.
