Electives listed here are classes for which we sell syllabi and materials. Enrolled students may also receive elective credit for such activities as art and music lessons, work experience, and volunteer work. Contact a member of the high school department with any questions. Also see our Bible classes.

Foreign Language

Hewitt currently carries Rosetta language programs in all the available languages. Additional textbooks for grammar are also available for French and Spanish. Our syllabus gives detailed instructions for using the Rosetta program, as well as other suggestions for study. Also included are recommendations for curriculum for lower grades. Hewitt recommends two years of a foreign language for all college-bound students. Grades 9-12

Creative Writing

Whether you want to write The Great American Novel, short stories for magazines, a play for your church, or simply for your own pleasure, this syllabus/text can help. This year-long course covers plotting, conflict, character development, point of view, dialogue, figurative speech, and more. Although intended primarily for short story and novel writing, aspiring playwrights and script writers will also find it instructional. Poetry is not covered. All projects are writing-based. No text is required; a bibliography of writing books is included. This class can only be taken as an elective. It cannot be used to fulfill an English credit. Grades 9-12

Art History

We looked a long time for a good art history book—one that wasn't too skimpy or too bogged down in detail—and this book fit the bill. The author writes in an engaging style while covering all important information for a year-long high-school level art history course. Beautiful color reproductions throughout. Note: contains some nudes (paintings and statues). Syllabus Covers ancient to modern Western art (with a brief nod towards Eastern art) including information on art styles and movements, and particular artists and their works. Requirements include papers, projects, and a test each quarter

Critical Thinking

This is a full-year course which will cover several topics related to critical thinking and logic. After introducing the basic concepts of both critical thinking and logic, this course moves on to discuss common errors people make in reasoning, an analysis of the techniques used in propaganda and advertising to mislead, and methods for analyzing arguments and value judgments. The student is encouraged to analyze everyday experiences in the course of studying these aspects of critical thinking. We feel that the training provided by this class will not only help students to be wiser in everyday life, but will also aid students in every aspect of their school careers.

Note that this book was written for classroom use and discussion. Because of this and the challenging nature of the material, more parental involvement is usually required than in most of our classes. Grades 9-12
