High School English Classes (Grades 9-12)
Hewitt currently offers five English options for grades 9 - 12. For our new English classes, focusing on writing and literature using whole books, short stories, poems, and essays, click here. This is our new Lightning Literature and Composition series, and allows the student to study literature arranged by time period, geography, and/or author (for example, American Litertature, British Literature, or Shakespeare). These classes are available at three levels: Basic, Standard, and Honors.
We still carry our older English classes, which use the "Best" series. These classes organize literature by genre (i.e., nonfiction, poetry, short stories, chapters of novels, and plays). These are available at a standard level (English 1, 2, 3, and 4) and at a more basic level (English Fundamentals 1, 2, 3, and 4). These classes are not available at an Honors level.
Quarters 1 and 2 teach writing through nonfiction literature. Style, organization, structure, author's purpose, biography and autobiography, viewpoint, and persuasive writing are covered. Quarters 3 and 4 cover poetry: rhyme and meter, form, poetic language, the speaker in poetry, and content. Throughout the year, the student will choose from a variety of writing projects, completing 6 to 8 assignments per quarter, in addition to one book report each quarter. Grade 9
Texts:
This year the student studies the short story. The book covers such aspects of story as plot, characters, conflict, symbolism, theme, figurative language, and tone. The student will read three short stories each quarter and write two papers on each story. Paper options include research papers, fiction, opinion essays, descriptive writing, and story analysis. In addition, the student will write one book report each quarter. Finally, to allow the student to practice what was learned about short stories, he or she will write a 7 to 10 page short story throughout the course of the year. Grade 10
Texts:
The student will explore the novel through reading chapters of great works. The textbook covers such elements of a novel as setting, point of view, character, conflict, plot, language, tone and mood, symbolism, humor, allegory, and theme. The student will read three chapters each quarter and write two papers on each chapter. Paper options include descriptive writing, fiction, opinion essays, research papers, and story analysis. Research skills are honed by the requirement of a 7 to 10 page research paper written throughout the course of the year. In addition, the student will write one book report each quarter. Grade 11
Texts:
This year the student studies plays. The textbook covers such aspects of plays as character, plot, conflict, staging, and theme. The student will read two selections each quarter and write two papers on each. In addition to the text, the student will read four Shakespearean plays (one per quarter) and write two papers on each of these plays. The student will also write one book report each quarter.
