High School Vocational and Practical Classes (Grades 9-12)

These classes apply directly to practical, everyday concerns. Health and typing are required for graduation; the other classes listed here are electives. These classes can be taken any year, but we recommend typing for freshman year because this class gives the student a skill which can be used throughout the rest of the high school years.

Health

This is a two-quarter course, and is usually taken freshman year with state history (another two-quarter course), but can be taken any year. Students keep a journal, complete activities, do a special project (goal setting), and take a quarter-end test each quarter. Second quarter students also read I Kissed Dating Goodbye and write an opinon essay in response to the book. This class covers such issues as basic physiology, diet, exercise, and spiritual, emotional, and social health. Syllabus includes a daily schedule. Grade 9

Typing

This is designed for a student using a computer program, but it may be adapted to those using a typewriter. Goals include developing keyboarding skills, formatting (e.g., letters), producing error-free final copy through proofreading and correction of errors, and developing performance under pressure. Although we recommend the Typing Instructor, you may use the computer typing program of your choice. Grade 9

Texts:

Practical Living for Women

This course is directed specifically towards home-schooled girls who will become homemakers. Topics include house-keeping, spiritual concerns, marriage, parenting, finances, grooming, and cooking. Each quarter includes projects and book reports.
