High School CoursesSpecial Needs Track (Grades 9-12)

For some of the English, history, and math courses in the special-needs high school track, we recommend the Pacemaker® series of textbooks from Globe-Fearon Publishing Company.  While these books are not Christian texts, we have not found them to be anti-Christian either.  The Pacemaker® curriculum fosters success by making academic subjects accessible and non-intimidating to special-needs students. The texts have great clarity and a lower reading level than standard high school books, yet they are not juvenile in appearance, insulting the student.  For all textbooks, divide the number of pages in each text by the number of days in your school year and you will calculate how many pages the student needs to cover each school day.  Students should simultaneously complete the Critical Thinking Workbook pages that correspond to the Pacemaker® textbook assignments as they go.  Below is a sample schedule.  Students should work to meet the high school graduation requirements of their specific states of residence.

9th Grade

Basic English (one credit)

The student works through an English grammar text and a vocabulary workbook and reads four novels over the course of the year.  (Download Book Reporting Form for Students to Use to Report on Novels)  Order by phone from Globe Fearon at 1-800-848-9500:

Order from Hewitt:  Basic World History (one credit)

Math (one credit)

Saxon Math 87 or higher.  If you are uncertain about which Saxon math level is appropriate, have your student take the Saxon Math Placement Test. If you do not wish to use the Saxon series, you may order from Globe Fearon at 1-800-848-9500:

General Science A (half credit)

Apologia General Science Student does half of the 16 modules in the textbook, 1 - 8, in grade 9 and the second half, 9 - 16, in grade 10.  (If desired the entire course may be completed within one year.)

Keyboarding (one credit)

Document 150 hours of time spent in using a typing software tutor program.  You may use your own program or order from Hewitt: Typing Instructor DeluxeVersion 15. Typically 150 hours of time is earned by spending 50 minutes per day over a 180-day school year.  Another idea is to log 75 hours one year and 75 hours again the next year, working 25 minutes per day over a 180-day year.

Physical Education

Two credits are required in P.E. sometime during the student's high school years. (For example, a half credit of P.E. may be taken each year for four years if desired.) For one credit document 150 hours and the activities that were engaged in during those periods. For a half credit, document 75 hours. P.E. hours may be a mixture of activities such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming, gymnastics, bicycling, weight-lifting, participation in team sports, aerobics, calisthenics, etc.  (Raking leaves, chopping wood, etc. do not fall under the heading of Physical Education.)

Elective (one credit)

Electives might include a computer course, home economics, or music lessons. This is often the time for the student to do things in accordance with their bent in life.  Some students get a part time job and log at least 75 hours over the course of the year for a half credit or 150 hours for a full credit.  Others opt for volunteer experience, doing something that they are interested in such as working as a vet's assistant, carpentry general laborer, etc. Often people are willing to train volunteers in jobs skills since they don't have to pay them wages. And sometimes a volunteer job leads to a paying one later on.
