I was born and raised in Ohio. My mother came from a large family, and so I had many cousins of all ages. I always enjoyed organizing games and teaching the younger ones how to play different sports. I also loved playing football, basketball, and baseball with my neighborhood buddies.

When I was in the fourth grade, the teacher sat Ernest, a boy we all knew was a slow learner, next to me. She asked if I would help him to keep track of his assignments and guide him when he needed help. I remember being glad that she had chosen me. This memory has come back to me many times as the moment that I first sensed a calling; it felt right and natural to help Ernest.

My father played the violin and instilled a love of music in my sister and me. So I was thrilled when he gave me permission to take violin lessons at school. I played in the school orchestra through junior high, but switched to the guitar in high school. In college I majored in music education with guitar as my principal instrument.

While student teaching in a general music class, I realized that I was drawn to the underdogs—the mainstreamed special education students.  I decided to pursue a master's degree in learning disabilities. As an educator, my mission has been to remediate the weak areas of special education students while simultaneously building upon their strengths to enable them to be successful adults.

I have a wife and two teenagers, whom we have homeschooled all of their lives.  We all enjoy music greatly. My wife has been a wonderful blessing to me. Through her I have learned more than I have from anyone else. She is my pot of gold.
