I have a B.A. in psychology, but my experience as a technical writer has been even more useful to me at Hewitt. I’ve been grading student papers and developing curriculum for Hewitt for over ten years. Although I provide help and feedback with all classes, I find it most exciting to watch students grow as writers, learning to express themselves with clarity and vigor.

Probably no surprise – two of my great passions are words and reading. Some of my favorite authors are William Shakespeare, Marcel Proust, Jorge Luis Borges, Emily Dickinson, Umberto Eco, and Virginia Woolf. I know that must sound like heavy-going; in my lighter moments I pick up P.G. Wodehouse, Rex Stout, Ruth Rendell, and Christopher Buckley. In truth, I’ll read just about anything – literature, pop fiction, mysteries, science fiction, nonfiction – any book whose writing isn’t so bad that it makes me cringe.

Even I can’t read all the time, and when I’m not reading I’m usually either writing, watching a movie, or painting. My writing efforts include some of Hewitt’s new Lightning Literature texts and my fitful attempts at fiction. I’ve been painting for about twelve years, and although I’ve sold a couple I don’t see retiring from Hewitt on my artwork any time soon. My movie choices are as eclectic as my reading, and I'm also a hopeless Trekkie.

At least, reading and painting is what I used to do until the wonderful addition to our family a few years ago of our son, Tobias Akira. Now most of my time is focused on him. His passions include all things vehicular, the alphabet, and scrambled eggs.

Another of my great loves is traveling. So far, in addition to large portions of the U.S., I’ve visited India, Bali, Honduras, and most of Europe several times, but my heart belongs to England. (Anyone who wants to offer me or my geek-husband a job in London, just email me at Hewitt!) This photo of me was taken in York, in the North of England. My most adventurous trip so far has probably been riding horses for a week across Iceland, sometimes for as long as twelve hours a day. But three weeks in India with the in-laws certainly gives galloping across a frozen wilderness a run for its money.

Sadly, I don’t have a horse to call my own, but I do have two cats, Strange and Charm (extra points to my physics students who can explain what the names mean). They live with my husband, Sean, my son, and me in our new home in San Mateo, California. I’m extremely fortunate in that my job at Hewitt allows me to work from home. I look forward to helping each of you meet your educational goals in any way I can.
