A Bee Sees: Grade 1

Truth Hidden in Nature
“Reason is the God-given means for discovering the truth that God discloses, whether in his world or his Word. While God wants to reach the heart with truth, he does not bypass the mind.” (Jonathan Edwards). Little children love animals. You can take this natural love/interest and help it to grow into a love for truth as found in the world. To think scientifically does not contradict Scripture. Our reason and logic can support our faith. A Bee Sees uses animal studies to lay a good foundation in science and to help children remember different character traits that should be found in their character.

All Grade-1 scope and sequence requirements are met in 36 daily lesson plans based on twenty animal studies: Bible/character, math, language, science/health, history/geography, art/music, and physical education. Though designed to take less than two hours a day, these can be broken up into smaller sessions during the day. Each unit has a drawing of the animal being studied that can be cut out and used as a sack or stick puppet, a poster for the moral characteristic emphasized in the lesson, and a recommended Aesop fable. Along with the reading provided by the readers, other reading books are recommended to support the unit’s theme which can obtained through your library or other resources.

What Else Will I Need?
With everything in the A Bee Sees Pack (8060), this program provides a full year of Grade-1 curriculum. You will need some type of math manipulatives (such as Unifix Cubes) and math counters (even beans). Some form of audio music (such as the Wee Sing series, though you can hear many of the suggested songs on the Internet) and letter flash cards would also be a nice addition.

For those using a different math program, we’ve packaged the program in a No-Math Pack (8060). It includes everything in the regular pack except SF-AW Mathematics 1.
