This is Hewitt's syllabus for students enrolled in our Honors U.S. History course which uses A Basic History of the United States for a text and covers colonization through current events. The syllabus shows them the objectives of the course, how to organize their study, the quarterly assignments, what to submit to Hewitt for grading, and grading criteria. There is also information on primary sources and how to find and use them, how to write a book report for history, and what Hewitt requires in reports submitted for grading.

Besides the basic text, added library sources, more extensive reading, research, and writing are required. Students desiring an "A" for this course should also plan to use more primary-source materials in their study. Students taking honors courses will receive one additional grade point; e.g., a "B" for the course will be recorded as 4.0 rather than 3.0.

Each quarter students work on a map, chapter questions, a time line, projects (chosen from a list of 48 included in the syllabus), papers, a book report (chosen from the reading list for the quarter), and essay exams. The syllabus includes a quarterly schedule and quarterly exams which students are to take and return to Hewitt for grading (the answers are NOT in the Syllabus).
