This is one of the texts used in Hewitt's high school program for students enrolled in one of our Church History courses. Bruce L. Shelley's treatment of history as the story of people makes this a very readable text. Often used in college classrooms, the story will captivate students who are interested in how the Church got here. The author states in his prologue, "Many Christians today suffer from historical amnesia." This book is meant to alleviate that condition. The Christian story is divided into eight ages: "Jesus and the Apostles," "Catholic Christianity," "The Christian Roman Empire," "The Christian Middle Ages," "The Reformation," "Reason and Revival," "Progress," and "Ideologies." Dr. Shelley has researched carefully to write a historically accurate, memorable and, clear account. Dr. Shelley brings the story of the church into the twenty-first century in this third edition. Forward by Scott A. Wenig. The book has black-and-white drawings, charts, time lines, suggested reading lists, bibliography, and an index.
