Seven Plays for Young People with Lessons for Teaching the Basic Elements of Literature: We highly recommend this approach for teaching literary analysis. In this beginning level for Best Plays each unit is built around a concept used in writing plays. Each begins with information about the author and story, an introduction to the concept being taught in the unit, and questions to think about as the selection is read. The selection is followed by "Reviewing and Interpreting" with questions for the student, the lesson, ideas and writing exercises for using the concept, and a discussion guide. The book has two-color illustrations, photographs, and a glossary. There is a teacher's edition available, Best Plays at middle and advanced levels, and other genres in the Best series at the introductory level (See Related Items below).

Selections are

  • A Young Lady of Property by Horton Foote
  • Back There by Rod Serling
  • When the Rattlesnake Sounds by Alice Childress
  • I Remember Mama by John van Druten (adapted from Mama's Bank Account) by Kathryn Forbes
  • The Monkey's Paw by W. W. Jacobs (adapted by Harriet Dexter)
  • Let Me Hear You Whisper by Paul Zindel
  • Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving (adapted by Adele Thane).
