We offer several Lightning Literature guides for high school. Most students will use two guides per year. Students who struggle with language arts may complete just one guide per year. None of the guides are definitely for any specific grade, but we do have recommendations on which to use when. These recommendations should not be viewed as restrictions. Much depends on student interest in the material. If you have further questions about any of these guides, please contact us.

American Literature: Early to Mid 19th Century
American Literature: Mid to Late 19th Century

These guides are especially recommended for freshmen, students new to Lightning Literature in any high school grade, students taking American History, or students interested in American literature. These guides are frequently used by students in 9th grade, but can profitably be used in any grade.

British Literature: Early to Mid 19th Century
British Literature: Mid to Late 19th Century

These guides are especially recommended for students who have completed at least one previous high school level Lightning Literature guide, who are studying world history, or who are interested in British literature. These guides are frequently used by students in 10th grade, but can profitably be used in any grade.

Speech

This guide is especially recommended for students new to Lightning Literature in any high school grade, or who are interested in a speech course or in history, or students who prefer to read many smaller pieces rather than book-length works.

Shakespeare: Tragedies and Sonnets
Shakespeare: Comedies and Sonnets

These guides are especially recommended for students who have already taken at least two previous high school level Lightning Literature guides, who are studying Renaissance history, or who are interested in Shakespeare. These guides are more focused and explore the works in greater depth than other Lightning Literature guides.

British: Medieval

This guide is especially recommended for students who have completed at least two previous high school level Lightning Literature guides, who are studying medieval history, or who are interested in medieval literature. The reading level of the material is quite high, but the rewards are correspondingly great.

British Christian: 19th-20th Centuries

This course is especially recommended for students who have already taken at least two previous high school level Lightning Literature guides, who are interested in Christian theology, or who are interested in these authors and works.

American Christian Authors

This guide is especially recommended for students who have completed at least two previous high school level Lightning Literature guides, who are interested in Christian theology, or who are interested in these authors and works. It is also strongly recommended that families choosing this guide commit to parent-student discussion on the issues raised, as the guide and the literature handle serious topics including racism, sexuality, and spiritual matters. The goal is to help students prepare for serious challenges, in college and life.

World Literature I: Africa and Asia
World Literature II: Latin America, Africa, Asia

These guides are especially recommended for students who have completed at least two previous high school level Lightning Literature guides, students interested in literature beyond that of Europe and America, students interested in cultural issues in literature, or students studying modern world history.
